Top-Notch Tech. Accessible Design.

The Motech Agency is a design and tech-strategies consultancy that works primarily with synagogues and Jewish non-profits.

We’re located in San Mateo, California, surrounded by the excitement and innovation of the Silicon Valley tech corridor, but we work with clients all over the world.

We keep a steady focus on:

  • Developing our expertise in what’s ‘current’ while maintaining a sense for the practical realities, limitations, and opportunities inherent in synagogues and non-profit organizations.
  • Collaborating with each client to develop a design aesthetic that’s eye-catching, functional, organic, and easy to maintain
  • Listening closely to our clients’ needs and developing bespoke solutions so that we never find ourselves offering advice that’s ‘boilerplate’ or ‘standard.’
  • Creatively structuring our own business model so that we can offer the highest levels of service and support at prices that respect the financial realities of organizational budgets.

Josh Mason-Barkin, RJE

founder, principal

Since we generally work with no more than two primary clients at a time, Josh Mason-Barkin, founder and principal, is the Agency’s sole full-time employee. We employ a network of skilled code ninjas, marketing gurus, and design experts on an as-needed basis.

Josh has masters degrees in Jewish education and Jewish non-profit management from Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, and served as director of congregational learning at both Temple Isaiah in Los Angeles and Temple Emanu-El in San Jose. He has also worked professionally as a graphic designer, copy editor, curriculum consultant, and IT manager.

Along the way, Josh co-authored two books, God: Jewish Choices for Struggling With the Ultimate and Artzeinu: An Israel Encounter, and was a regular contributor to a podcast about airline mileage programs. He is also a decent bowler. (Book average: 175.)

Josh is based on San Mateo, California, where he also runs a photography business. He is married to Rabbi Sara Mason-Barkin, and he’s Charlie (age ) and Sela (age ) Mason-Barkin’s dad. In his free time, he closely follows his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Bears. He feels strongly about the Oxford comma, eradicating the practice of typing two spaces after a period, and the proper use of contractions. His favorite Beatle is George.

Josh is responsive, patient, and effective. Hire him!
We really felt it was easy to talk to Josh and he very much understood us… I can’t see how it could have gone better.
